I’m freezing, the radiator isn’t working! What can I do?

Beijing winters are very dry and biting cold! Following the summer heat, September normally brings nice and warm autumn weather. Alas, this period is rather short and weather is cooling down quickly during October. In Beijing, central heating is – surprise, surprise – centrally controlled. The city government will set the dates for when heating starts and when it ends, typically from medio November to medio March. This means that neither you, your landlord nor we have any influence on it. So if it gets a bit chilly in your apartment just before or after heating season, be prepared with an extra stock of blankets, passion killers and wife-beaters, that should do the job.

We generally advice against using electrical heating devices or the AC to heat up apartments, because the power drain of such devices is enormous and will have a significant impact on your electricity bill!
